Our story starts way back
Olukismet foundation
Nigeria, a nation of over 200 million inhabitants is reputed for having the highest number of persons living below poverty line. The last figure from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in May 2020 puts the figure at 40% 137,430 naira ($381.75) a year, which represents about 83 million people living in poverty by the UN standard.
In reality, especially giving the current recession in the economy, the figures are far in excess of the working document by the NBS.
As an organization engaged in reaching out to the indigent and poorest of the poors in the nook and crannies of the nation through providing of relief materials, Olukismet has indeed being a source of hope to many Nigerians in local communities in no mean measures. However, we will only be frank to admit that our effort is not any different from a drop in the ocean in the face of the overwhelming numbers we encounter during our outreaches.
From the captured scenes in one of our outreaches, the people were overjoyed by the succour provided by the philanthropic and humanitarian gesture of Olukismet. One beneficiaries had this to say: “Olukismet is now the government that we know, this season would have been uninteresting and worthless as usual if not for your kind donations today, I’m happy and grateful, God will multiply you”.
In many local communities, the poverty stories are heart wrenching, people who are hopeless about the next meal and what the next day holds for them; people who are incapacitated and have no one to provide their daily meal; people whose only hope of survival is for the government to support with means of livelihood; but sadly, they are left in their despair.
At Olukismet, touring these local communities, we have seen pains and struggles for survival amidst great hopelessness, and while we are trying our best in providing succour and relief for these local people, we are also constrained by sufficient and adequate resources to lift these fellow country women and men from their pitiable situation.
The stories of many of our local inhabitants indeed leaves much to desire and calls for concerted efforts to alleviate the many sufferings.
We are therefore calling on government, private donors and the international communities to support us in our bid to continuously reach out with immediate and sustainable solutions to the nation’s teeming poor population.
